Sai Life Sciences Sustainability Report - 2023-24

109 Proactive measures to address hazards Containment validation can be performed using a variety of method; however, the most common method is to mimic the actual process using a substitute or surrogate compounds. In the reporting year we were focused on Containment performance validation as part of the risk assessment procedure. The need to meet the Containment performance target (CPT) is outlined in the procedure. Precautions on handling of hazardous chemicals: Some of the hazardous chemicals used at our sites are pyrophoric by nature, which means they react with air to produce heat. Specific checklists are prepared for handling these, including information on basic hazards, PPE requirements, spill control kits, and fire extinguishers. Staff are trained on handling, and mandatory safety requirements are ensured before handling/dispensing/disposing of the chemicals under the supervision of safety officers and experienced staff. Provision of protective equipment Sai relies on engineering controls as the primary defense and views PPE as the last resort. We strictly follow standard procedures for using PPE when working with chemicals, materials, and equipment. Depending on the specific job, we create a PPE matrix for each site. The HSE divisions on site ensure there is a sufficient inventory of PPE available and distribute it to employees as needed. Our PPE kit includes a helmet with a face shield, safety goggles, earmuffs, full-face respirators, disposable nose masks, airline respiratory masks, self-contained breathing apparatus, fire-retardant suits, chemical-resistant suits and aprons, safety belts, safety shoes, and various types of hand gloves such as neoprene, dielectric, heat-resistant, and disposable nitrile gloves. We have the capability to conduct fit tests for employees and workers as part of the respiratory protection program. While we focus on investing in the best available engineering control, we also prioritize reducing employee exposure to respiratory hazards. Fit testing helps ensure that the user has selected the correct size respirator and that a seal against the face can be made to provide the expected protection. We provide self-contained breathing apparatus for entry, rescue, and escape from environments that are oxygen-deficient or immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH), as it offers the best respiratory protection. We use arc flash suits for electrical tasks, including power isolation, lock & tag arrangement and removal, inside feeder modification, cable termination at cable strips, meter reading measurement, and opening the doors of energized circuits. Process Safety Management We conduct process safety studies to understand the risks of handling the chemicals or products while introducing new products and changes to the existing process chemistry. We have in-house Process Safety (PS) capability with a state of the art testing lab comprising of wide range of advanced equipment including Adiabatic Reaction Calorimeter, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermal Screening Unit (TSu), Micro Reaction Calorimeter and various powder safety testing equipment including Modified Hartman Tube, Friction & Shock sensitivity equipment and Minimum Ignition Energy (MiE) equipment. Our process safety talent includes five full time process safety associates. We embed process safety elements in the entire life cycle of the product. The process safety scrutiny starts from quote stage and assessments are done by competent teams across the lifecycle. The documentation is utilized during piloting and production for smooth scale-up. We continue with process safety emphasis with cross functional teams carrying out walk through, P&ID reviews and PSSR.
