Sai Life Sciences Sustainability Report - 2023-24

110 Safety is the result we get when we care about the work we are doing, the people we are doing it with, and the way we are doing that work. Safety requires participation by all members of the team including contractors and contract workers. Specifically with the contractors, we ensure that our expectations are agreed upon, with that becoming the premise of involvement and engagement. Building Involvement Worker participation in HSE matters We believe the frontline teams and sharp end workers often know the most about potential hazards associated with their jobs and in the workplace. They need to be given the right forums to voice their observations and participate in recommending solutions. The workers and shopfloor team members are part of the HSE committee and meet once in a quarter. The unit head appoints the HSE Committee members once in two years, in consultation with all departmental heads. In addition to the departmental heads, at least one representative of each department and a contract helper shall constitute the safety committee members. The committee discusses status of internal audits / inspections, external audits, and reviews HSE objectives & targets, recent incidents, resource requirements, PPE usage and emergency readiness. Our HSE teams and Line managers are in regular communication with the committee members to motivate and educate them about the importance of involvement and the utility of their inputs for improving the safety system. We have 43% of the total workforce across all locations represented in the health & safety committee. We are also including contract workers in fire drill training and making them aware of ERT procedures. Contractor Guideline We have a guideline for contractors which outlines the steps to take to familiarise them with HSE rules/ norms to be followed by them and their personnel while working in our facilities. This helps in setting the HSE and compliance expectations right at the time of contractor selection. As per the guideline we ensure each contractor, contractor’s supervisor and workers undergo HSE training prior to commencing any job. Our approach includes sharing a copy of Contractor HSE Guideline and taking an undertaking from our contractors that they understand the guideline and accept to follow it as part of the contract towards the mutual goal of maintaining safe working conditions in our facilities. Few health and safety procedures translated into regional languages (specially for contractors) Engaging Leaders The Leaders undertake monthly gemba walks to engage and influence safety related elements in the workplace. The walks help us focus on how to enable people to stay safe by positioning them to succeed, and how to build commitment and optimum safety responses through reinforcement.
