From Commitment to Action: Sai Life Sciences makes strides towards a greener earth
On the World Environment Day, we reflect on the efforts we’ve taken towards sustainability. A year ago, on June 5th, 2023, Sai Life Sciences renewed its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), charting a roadmap to achieve specific environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets by FY27, with FY22 as the baseline year. Three of these SDGs pertain to the environment including reducing water consumption, cutting down on GHG emissions, boosting the usage of clean energy, and decreasing hazardous waste generation through co-processing and alternate reuse. Here's how our journey has unfolded in each of these areas:
Reducing water consumption:
Sai Life Sciences has implemented various measures to reduce specific water consumption by 25% by FY27. Water is crucial in our production processes, and we've deployed smart solutions to minimize its usage. For example, we employ a spray ball system to clean reactors, effectively removing residues or contaminants while using less water compared to traditional methods. Similarly, high-pressure pumps for descaling are utilized, unleashing water at a controlled, elevated pressure to effectively remove scale buildup without excessive usage. Complementing these cleaning systems, sensor-equipped taps and pressure compensating aerators ensure water is used only, when necessary, thus minimizing waste. In addition to judicious water use, we focus on treating process effluents and utilizing treated wastewater for cooling tower backup, significantly reducing freshwater consumption. As we expand our capacity to treat and reuse water resources, we've also adopted rainwater collection and treatment systems and doubled our rainwater utilization in FY24 compared to FY23. By capturing and treating rainwater, we not only reduce our reliance on freshwater sources but also contribute to local ecosystem conservation efforts.
Cutting down on GHG emissions and adopting Renewable sources:
In order to reduce specific greenhouse gas emissions by 30% and replace 70% of our energy requirement with renewable sources, Sai Life Sciences has made significant strides. At the organization level, 50% of our energy needs are met by renewable sources. At our Bidar facility, 89% of our energy needs are met through clean energy, primarily solar and wind power. By harnessing abundant natural resources, we're accelerating our transition to clean and sustainable energy solutions, minimizing our reliance on fossil fuels and reducing our carbon footprint.
In our ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote eco-friendly practices, Sai Life Sciences has introduced electric vehicles for interim material transfer.
In the area of energy-saving initiatives, implementing solutions like flash jet pumps in our Multiple Effect Evaporator (MEE) plant allows us to recover steam and condensate, maintaining optimal temperatures while conserving energy and resources. Similarly, we've replaced conventional CFL lights with energy-efficient LED alternatives, resulting in a considerable reduction in energy consumption, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.
Managing Hazardous Waste:
We have been working towards reducing specific hazardous waste generation by 10% and recycling 90% of hazardous waste through co-processing and alternate reuse. We've ensured 100% disposal of hazardous waste to cement industries for co-processing, where it's utilized as alternate fuel or raw material. Embracing the concept of circularity, we minimize waste generation and reduce reliance on conventional fuels like coal.
Waste Minimization and Management
As Sai Life Sciences prepares to mark another World Environment Day, our journey exemplifies dedication and commitment to sustainable practices, laying a foundation for a greener, more environmentally conscious future.
